Having gone through a lot of gaming headsets through the course of my lifetime as a gamer, it’s kind of difficult to narrow down just one product which I can hail as the best gaming headset for 2015. But after careful consideration and numerous hours of game time using different gaming headsets, I have made a decision.
The gaming headset I have chosen is not your usual suspect. Surprisingly (and true enough, I myself am surprised with my decision), the Astro A50 is the best gaming headset for 2015 for me. But why is Astro A50 the best?
The Astro A50 is a plenty comfortable Wireless gaming headset. For someone like me who plays for several hours, this gaming headset did not weigh me down at all. The ear cups had very soft cushion padding and the headband was very comfortable to wear as well. As for its durability, let my clumsiness tell the story. I woke up one morning, eager to start playing, and went straight for my chair. Sitting down, I totally forgot that I left the A50 there. Scrambling to get it, I quickly tested it out and I was shocked to know that it was still in perfect condition.
This Astro gaming headset makes use of a 5.8 GHz wireless technology which boasts of operating at a higher frequency than its competitors, this is then combined with Astro’s wireless mixAmps. Now all these big words are actually good for something – clarity and range for the A50. At times when I paused the game just to answer the door or grab a glass of water from the kitchen, I was surprised that the A50 was still receiving sound, and let me tell you, the distance from my “man cave” to the front door or kitchen takes a bit of a walk. The sound was not choppy at all and I didn’t get any interference whatsoever.
But getting great reception from a gaming headset from a distance isn’t really the true test of how I came up with the best gaming headset for this year. The main criteria for judging any good gaming headset is its audio quality, and the Astro A50 definitely backs up its bark with its bite.
Astro claims that they have been working with pro-gamers and top audio designers to make the A50 deliver the best sounds, and after using it for a while myself, I got to say: I believe it. Now, I know that they didn’t work with me (pro-gamer, wink wink), but the A50 wireless gaming headset truly delivers great quality audio. With the A50, you get great detail from whatever it is your are listening to and rich audio that really feels full – you know that you are getting everything there is to hear.
But if you think that is the end of it, wait till you get your ears to hear the Dolby Digital 7.1. Once I got it hooked up, it was like I was in the game myself. I got to hear sounds that I think the character I’m playing would hear.
I have been using the Astro A50 gaming headset on a couple of games recently, one is on Dragon Age: Inquisition on the PC and the other is Mortal Kombat X on the Playstation 4.
On Dragon Age: Inquisition, every swing of the blades and every spell cast could be heard, and not just heard, but felt. Casting spells like Mind Blast makes you really hear the thump, while Chain Lightning really seemed to be shocking. The depth and detail to the sound is phenomenal! The first time I encounter the Northern Hunter and had the Dolby Digital 7.1 on was truly epic. A great battle coupled with amazing audio just gave me goosebumps.
As for Mortal Kombat X, you could hear every glorious blood splatter in great detail as well as be amazed with the rich sounds, for example, Subzero’s ice never sounded so good – you can hear every crackle and shatter. Ambient noises as well as interacting with the environment rewards you with great sounds. Fatalities and X-Ray moves seemed to be more painful, and of course, “Finish Him!” never sounded so epic!
Comfort, durability, great audio and surround sound makes the Astro A50 claim the title of the best gaming headset of 2015 – a well-deserved victory for such a well crafter gaming gear.
